HESS J1825-137: A pulsar wind nebula associated with PSR B1823-13?
HESS J1825-137 was detected with a significance of 8.1 in the
Galactic Plane survey conducted with the H.E.S.S. instrument in 2004. Both HESS
J1825-137 and the X-ray pulsar wind nebula G18.0--0.7 (associated with the
Vela-like pulsar PSR B1823-13) are offset south of the pulsar, which may be the
result of the SNR expanding into an inhomogeneous medium. The TeV size ( pc, for a distance of 4 kpc) is times larger than the X-ray size,
which may be the result of propagation effects as a result of the longer
lifetime of TeV emitting electrons, compared to the relatively short lifetime
of keV synchrotron emitting electrons. The TeV photon spectral index of can also be related to the extended PWN X-ray synchrotron photon index of
, if this spectrum is dominated by synchrotron cooling. The
anomalously large size of the pulsar wind nebula can be explained if the pulsar
was born with a relatively large initial spindown power and braking index
, provided that the SNR expanded into the hot ISM with relatively low
density ( cm).Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the Proc. of the 29th International

Security analysis of the micro transport protocol with a misbehaving receiver
BitTorrent is the most widely used Peer-to-Peer (P2P) protocol and it comprises the largest share of traffic in Europe. To make BitTorrent more Internet Service Provider (ISP) friendly, BitTorrent Inc. invented the Micro Transport Protocol (uTP). It is based on UDP with a novel congestion control called Low Extra Delay Background Transport (LEDBAT). This protocol assumes that the receiver always gives correct feedback, since otherwise this deteriorates throughput or yields to corrupted data. We show through experimental investigation that a misbehaving uTP receiver, which is not interested in data integrity, can increase the bandwidth of the sender by up to five times. This can cause a congestion collapse and steal large share of a victim’s bandwidth. We present three attacks, which increase the bandwidth usage significantly. We have tested these attacks in a real world environment and show its severity both in terms of number of packets and total traffic generated. We also present a countermeasure for protecting against the attacks and evaluate the performance of that defence strategy
Universal Unitarity Triangle and Physics Beyond the Standard Model
We make the simple observation that there exists a universal unitarity
triangle for all models, like the SM, the Two Higgs Doublet Models I and II and
the MSSM with minimal flavour violation, that do not have any new operators
beyond those present in the SM and in which all flavour changing transitions
are governed by the CKM matrix with no new phases beyond the CKM phase. This
universal triangle can be determined in the near future from the ratio (Delta
M)_d/(Delta M)_s and sin(2 beta) measured first through the CP asymmetry in
B_d^0 to psi K_S and later in K to pi nu nubar decays. Also suitable ratios of
the branching ratios for B to X_{d,s} nu nubar and B_{d,s} to mu^+ mu^- and the
angle gamma measured by means of CP asymmetries in B decays can be used for
this determination. Comparison of this universal triangle with the
non-universal triangles extracted in each model using epsilon, (Delta M)_d and
various branching ratios for rare decays will allow to find out in a
transparent manner which of these models, if any, is singled out by experiment.
A virtue of the universal triangle is that it allows to separate the
determination of the CKM parameters from the determination of new parameters
present in the extensions of the SM considered here.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Flavor decomposition of the elastic nucleon electromagnetic form factors
The u- and d-quark contributions to the elastic nucleon electromagnetic form
factors have been determined using experimental data on GEn, GMn, GpE, and GpM.
Such a flavor separation of the form factors became possible up to 3.4 GeV2
with recent data on GEn from Hall A at JLab. At a negative four-momentum
transfer squared Q2 above 1 GeV2, for both the u- and d-quark components, the
ratio of the Pauli form factor to the Dirac form factor, F2/F1, was found to be
almost constant, and for each of F2 and F1 individually, the d-quark portions
of both form factors drop continuously with increasing Q2.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A holistic approach to enhance the use of neglected and underutilized species: the case of Andean grains in Bolivia and Peru
The IFAD-NUS project, implemented over the course of a decade in two phases, represents the first UN-supported global effort on neglected and underutilized species (NUS). This initiative, deployed and tested a holistic and innovative value chain framework using multi-stakeholder, participatory, inter-disciplinary, pro-poor gender- and nutrition-sensitive approaches. The project has been linking aspects often dealt with separately by R&D, such as genetic diversity, selection, cultivation, harvest, value addition, marketing, and final use, with the goal to contribute to conservation, better incomes, and improved nutrition and strengthened livelihood resilience. The project contributed to the greater conservation of Andean grains and their associated indigenous knowledge, through promoting wider use of their diversity by value chain actors, adoption of best cultivation practices, development of improved varieties, dissemination of high quality seed, and capacity development. Reduced drudgery in harvest and postharvest operations, and increased food safety were achieved through technological innovations. Development of innovative food products and inclusion of Andean grains in school meal programs is projected to have had a positive nutrition outcome for targeted communities. Increased income was recorded for all value chain actors, along with strengthened networking skills and self-reliance in marketing. The holistic approach taken in this study is advocated as an effective strategy to enhance the use of other neglected and underutilized species for conservation and livelihood benefits
